About the modules
Our German modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public.
Available on a semester basis (11-12 weeks), the modules aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning.
Levels
If you are unsure about your level, let us know when applying and we will invite you for a short placement interview to understand your previous experience and current needs.
- Beginner
You have no previous experience of learning the language.
- Autumn: LAS162A German Beginner 1
- Spring:
- LAS162B German Beginner 1 (Repeat of LAS162A)
- LAS156 German Beginner 2 (Continuation of LAS162A)
- Year Long: LAS184 German Beginner Intensive
- Post-Beginner
You have some basic experience of learning the language and aren't a complete beginner.
- Autumn: LAS174 German Post-Beginner 1
- Spring: LAS167 German Post-Beginner 2
- Intermediate
You have studied the language for one to two years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good GCSE, and can interact with 'friendly' native speakers in common, expected situations.
- Autumn: LAS2129 German Intermediate 1
- Spring: LAS2100 German Intermediate 2
- Year long: LAS2148 German Intermediate Intensive
- Higher Intermediate
You have studied the language for two to three years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good AS-level, and can interact with some ease with 'friendly' native speakers in common, expected situations.
- Advanced
You have studied the language for some years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good A-Level, and can interact quite naturally with native speakers in standard situations. You want to gain in fluency and accuracy in more advanced situations.

- Higher Advanced
You are an advanced user of the language and have had opportunities to demonstrate your effective communicative skills in the field. You want to gain in sophistication and accuracy in specific situations.
- Autumn: LAS2113 German Higher Advanced 1
- Spring: LAS2140 German Higher Advanced 2
- Proficient
You may not be a near-native speaker yet, but you have a solid experience of interacting with such speakers, linguistically and culturally, and you need to hone your skills for specific purposes.
- Autumn: LAS394 German Proficient 1
- Spring: LAS391 German Proficient 2
