Diamond Building

Constructed in 2015, the Diamond is one of the most innovative buildings on the University of Sheffield's campus. It is facilitated by the Multidisciplinary Engineering Education (MEE) team, who deliver engaging, practical lab sessions to students in the 19 specialist laboratories housed in the building. It is also home to the iForge - the student makerspace, and the Diamond Kitchen - a café and social space for staff, students and visitors to campus.

A Brief History of Sheffield

Sheffield, whose name derives from the River Sheaf which runs through the city, has been occupied for at least 12,800 years, with the earliest evidence of human activity at , only 20 miles outside of the city centre. Sheffield Castle (now demolished) was a stronghold built after the Norman Conquest in 1066 and was one of the locations, along with Sheffield Manor, where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth I from 1570 to 1584. 
You may often hear Sheffield referred to by the nickname 'Steel City.' Sheffield has been known for its steel-work for centuries, and is even mentioned in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (1380). Sheffield gained world-wide notoriety for its steel-work during the Industrial Revolution and Sheffield steel products were exported around the world until the 1980s when manufacturing largely moved overseas.
Due to its position of importance in the steel industry, Sheffield  was involved in making weapons and ammunition for the Second World War.  Because of this, Sheffield was heavily bombed during what is now called the 'Sheffield Blitz.' Much of the city centre and surrounding industrial estates were destroyed.
Today Sheffield is known for its vibrant city life, picturesque views over the Peak District National Park, two excellent football teams, and two extraordinary universities. As you'll see, many British and international students come to study in Sheffield and end up making their home here.
